ACUPUNCTURE

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is a branch of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCM), which is thought to be one of the oldest forms of veterinary medicine in the world.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are 14 primary channels or meridians within the body, where energy (Qi) flows constantly and ensure overall good health. However, if there is a blockage in one of more of these meridians, due to pian or disease, the energy stops its normal flow, and the body loses its equilibrium. By inserting needles in specific acupuncture points, we can restore the natural flow of energy, and improve or resolve a different array of conditions.

Nowadays, acupuncture is well accepted by both the medical and veterinary professions as an excellent alternative treatment, to be used alone or in combination with traditional western Medicine. Scientific research had proven that acupuncture blocks painful stimuli at the level of the spinal cord, causes release of anti-inflammatory-like substances, and influences the hormonal homeostasis in the body.

WHAT CAN ACUPUNCTURE TREAT?

Acupuncture is a great treatment for many Musculoskeletal Pathologies, like neck-back pain, sacro-iliac injuries, lameness, arthritis.

Other condition treated are:

  • Respiratory disease: Hives, COPD, pulmonary bleeding.

  • Reproduction: Irregular cycle, anoestrus, poor infertility, endometritis, and more.

  • Others: Eye ulcers, behavioural issues, mild neurological problems, gastric ulcers etc.

WHAT TO EXPECT

We start with a Consult, gathering relevant history with a thorough physical exam, with specific attention to the system/area of concern. Treatment consists in insertion of fine needles in specific point selected based on examination. Treatment lasts about 20-30 min. Some horses will improve after one session, others will need several treatments with an interval of 1 to 4 weeks, depending on severity of condition addressed, as well as subjective response.
